Summary
"So you'll tell him, then?" asks Stede.
"No," Izzy says, folding his arms across his chest.
"But why?" cries Stede. He looks genuinely quite distressed at the thought.
Izzy shrugs uncomfortably. "Why should I? I don't want anything to change. I don't want to be his fucking boyfriend. And he doesn't want to be mine."

Lucius and Stede find out that Izzy and Ed are soulmates and decide the only possible happy ending for them is romance. Izzy and Ed disagree.

Summary
"Fuck me!" Ed says when he finally takes in the situation. The situation in question seemingly being a younger version of himself, mid-twenties, right on the prime of the whole Blackbeard schtick, crouched defensively on deck and surrounded by half of the Revenge's crew. The Babybeard, for his part, has been shrewdly sizing him up, trying to be all subtle about it, but now makes a show of dubiously eyeing him up and down.
"Seems to me you'd be getting the better end of that deal, Old Man." Oh, he is absolutely fucking delightful, all wound up and prickly and still convinced he has shit-all to prove to anyone at all. Ed is going to have so much fun crushing his entire worldview!
"Aww, don't dismiss the value of experience," he winks, "I know a lot more about what you like than you do." He punctuates this with a delicate sip of his tea, pinky out, an airy swish of the sleeve of his wrapping gown.

The Mad Devil Pyrate Blackbeard has been living in kinda-retired bliss for a couple of years now, mostly going by Ed these days and enjoying a spoiled and pampered life as The Infamous Captain Edwards's co-captain, when he is abruptly faced with his worst and most fucking annoying foe yet: Himself.Series

Summary

Summary
Stede had seen the way Edward looked at his library, full of awe and almost childlike wonder. He had wondered in passing at what he perceived as his friend’s aversion to books despite Edward’s clear enjoyment of Stede’s nightly stories. But somehow he had never brought those thoughts to completion. He had never fully, consciously understood that Edward could not read. And that realization broke his heart.
Inspired by the look of utter agony on Stede's face after he sees Edward sign the Act of Grace contract with an X. Canon-compliant, all taking place within this scene in episode 9. Title from the song "Prince of Darkness" by Indigo Girls.

Summary
Stede quite enjoys reading and discussing the things he's read with Ed, and decides it would be so much fun to have a book club.

Summary
Ed stops in his tracks to look over at Lucius. The only sound that can be heard is the scratching of the feather against the paper as the ink spills over in words. He just looks at him, waiting for a reaction.
Once he’s written down the very last word Lucius looks up at him, hoping for more words. But there’s nothing. He just stands there as tall as ever, with all his hair kempt back and in a half-bun. If you squint your eyes, he doesn’t really look like a pirate but more like a guy who lives off making music. It’d be amusing if it wasn’t so damn sad.
. . .
Even now it is Lucius' job to write. And he mostly takes commissions from his captain, noting everything down he wants Stede to read once he returns. After they learn that he is never going to return, things turn bad. Kraken-Level bad.

Summary
"What remarkable penmanship you have," he said.
It would be another decade before Ed understood why those words sent his blood to boiling. "Passive aggression" Stede would say, ignorant to the question he'd just answered. Back then, Henderson rolled up his parchment and Ed took note of the way his lip curled at the spilled ink, the careless way he handed off Ed's efforts to some nameless underling.
They made their trade. Henderson went back to his ship. Ed gave Izzy a different gesture and eight hours later it was ash in the harbor.
Or: the one where Stede teaches Ed how to read and it (mostly) turns out fine.

Summary
"Besides, you can’t spell Stede without Ed,” Lucius winks. And waits for Ed’s response. Of which there is only blank staring. And okay, fine maybe that wasn’t his best joke but come on, it deserves some reaction.
“You can’t?” Ed asks, puzzled.
Lucius blinks back. “Uh, yeah.”
“Well, how the fuck would I know that? I can’t read,” Ed says crossly. He pushes himself up to a sitting position (thank God, the wallowing was getting to be a bit much). He looks at Lucius expectantly.
“Right. Sorry,” says Lucius slowly. God this is so awkward. Ed is still looking at him. His large brown eyes flick towards the quill in Lucius’s hand. And then back up to Lucius. And then back to the pen.
“Would you like me to teach you?” Lucius offers.
“Wow, would you man? That would be great,” Ed beams.
Lucius fights to make his responding grimace look more like a smile. Well, if he teaches Blackbeard to read and write, then at least the man can write his shitty poetry without subjecting Lucius to it.

Lucius teaches Ed to read and that somehow fixes everything

Summary
“My dear man, why ever didn’t you tell me?”
The lace cuff of Stede’s sleeve drapes ever so delicately over Ed’s bare hand. He feels like a fucking idiot.
“Books are something you care about.” Ed gestures vaguely at the contents of the room. “I didn’t – I couldn’t just say no to you showing me something important.”
-
or: Ed can't read, so Stede reads to him.
